Liu Yige

Huqin virtuoso of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Liu joined the HKCO in 2023. Liu holds a Master’s degree from the Central Conservatory of Music, where she studied under the tutelage of acclaimed huqin performer and instructor Yu Hongmei. She began learning piano, violin, and other instruments as a child, and started studying the erhu at 8 years old. As a university student, Liu received a National Scholarship, and was the top Level 1 Scholarship recipient. Liu has traveled extensively internationally as a member of delegations.

She has performed numerous solo concerts, and also lectures for salons held by the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Liu received the Finalist award at the 8th and 9th Golden Bell Awards, the Excellence Award at the 4th Outstanding Arts Awards, the Gold Award in the Erhu Advanced Division of the 3rd Nanyang International Music Competition in Singapore, and the Bronze Award at the 2nd ‘Jin Lusheng’ Chinese Instrumental Music Competition. Liu’s composition Waters of Heaven won second place at the 3rd Music Anthology Exhibition of Original Compositions From Nationwide Schools; her piece Light Year was published on the album Chinese Children’s Music Television Album. Liu has written several theses, including Research On the Use and Performance of Musical Elements of Yunnan Minorities in the Erhu Concerto ‘The Rite of the Sun’; Chinese and Foreign Cultural Exchanges and Syncretism As Viewed From the Angle of Musical Instruments; and Modern Transformations and Considerations On the Art of Folk Music Performance. Liu has repeatedly received top level awards from her city for excellence in teaching, and has been named a National Gold Medal Instructor.
